Shields Down

Resignations happen in a moment, and it’s not when you declare, “I’m resigning.” The moment happened a long time ago when you received a random email from a good friend who asked, “I know you’re really happy with your current gig because you’ve been raving about it for a year, but would you like to come visit Our Company? No commitment. Just coffee.” Now, everyone involved in this conversation transaction is aware of what is going down. While there is certainly no commitment, there is a definitely an agenda. The reason they want you to visit The Company is because, of course, they want you there in the building because seeing a potential future is far more compelling than describing it. Still, seeing it isn’t the moment of resignation. The moment happened the instant you decided, “What the hell? I haven’t seen Don in months and it’d be good to see him.” Your shields are officially down. A Potential Future Your shields drop the moment you let a glimpse of a potential different future in...

Alcohol as a social technology to check the trustworthiness of others

Ohhh, never thought of this hypothesis: that the act of getting drunk together might be a social technology that helps us verify the trustworthiness of others by inhibiting their higher cognitive functions and thus making it harder to consciously fake things. That would make sense. > To enhance our natural thin-slicing abilities, humans have therefore also developed various cultural practices that make these instant assessments more reliable. These techniques take advantage of the fact that deception is fundamentally a cold-cognition act and relies on cognitive control centers. This means that if we can impair the cognitive control abilities of people we're trying to judge, we’ll do a better job of sussing them out: they will be less able to confuse our cheater-detection systems. > In one study that has proven enormously useful to law enforcement agencies, researchers found that police officers could significantly improve their ability to detect false statements if suspects...

The Ten Commandments of Egoless Programming

Appropriate, even if old…I’ve seen it referenced as coming from  The Psychology of Computer Programming , written in 1971, but I don’t actually see it in the text. Regardless, here are The Ten Commandments of Egoless Programming, found on  @wyattdanger ‘s blog  post  on receiving advice from his dad: Understand and accept that you will make mistakes.  The point is to find them early before they make it into production. Fortunately, except for the few of us developing rocket guidance software at JPL, mistakes are rarely fatal in our industry. We can, and should, learn, laugh, and move on. You are not your code.  Remember that the entire point of a review is to find problems, and problems will be found. Don’t take it personally when one is uncovered.  (Allspaw note – related: see below, number #10, and the points Theo made above.) No matter how much “karate” you know, someone else will always know more.  Such an individual can teach you some new mov...

I was fat once! Now I run!

On Aug 12, 2013 I weighed 107 kg, which, for a 5'4'' guy, is 47 kg more than the Indian Army standards. But today, I weigh 82 kg, and I continue to lose a few pounds every week! At one point of time, running 100 metres would make me all tired and sweaty, but today I can easily run 10 km at a stretch! So this guide is for all those couch potatoes who have lost all hopes of getting a good body! I was at that stage myself. I know how it feels like. I know the bullshit that you keep telling yourself as to how you are not all that bad, and how the world should accept you the way you are! Let me tell you this straight! You are NOT special. You are just another lazy bum who wants things to change but does not want to endure any suffering! Or even worse, you are one of those who act on an impulse every few months. You hit the gym for a week and boom!, you lose it all again. The first step is to accept that you have a pathetic body and that this needs to change! Start Sm...

When I will be king : All bureaucracy will be corrupt

We all hate corruption. Why? Because it creates an disparate, divided state, part of which is corrupt, and part not. As a future monarch of a futuristic society, I want my state to always be in unison. So in my administration, all bureaucrats will be corrupt. In fact, corruption will be the sole criterion for successful career growth; the more corrupt the official, the higher up the ladder will he be. To the righteous, this idea may seem outrageous, but hey, isn't this an unfair world already? A constable of the local police earns more than a software developer today. So by the classical laws of measurement, it will be fair to say that he produces more value to the state than the software guy. And it then becomes the state's responsibility to reward him for what is rightfully his. What is a society constituted of? Common people! The Aam Aadmi! And only if each of these "Aam Aadmis" progresses that the society will progress as a whole. And what better a way than...

I am going to vote this time, are you?

I had never been interested in polity. Neither in school, nor in college, and not even when I started rising the corporate ladder. I always thought I am created for more novel deeds and politics is only for subtle minds. I had always been a torch-bearer of the " sab-chalta-hai ", the cliché Indian psychology. I have bribed, favoured, broken rules and always gotten over clean, because, well, I, always had the support of some known faces. These minor acts of, lets say negligence, never got on to my nerves because everyone around was doing the same. And I did not want to play any different. Who, you ask, am I? Well, I am the educated, common, Indian citizen . I am you. I never really cared who my MLA is, or which party is in power. I have always enjoyed Election day as just another holiday. And I never, never gave a thought to casting my vote. However this is going to change this time. I am fed up now. I am fed up with this Govt. I am fed up with the state of law and o...

Before you fire that delete command

Rule of thumb for me is that every DELETE or UPDATE query should start life as a SELECT query. The eight stages of DELETE: SELECT what you're deleting; fix the mistake in the query (there's always one); SELECT again; BEGIN TRANSACTION; DELETE; SELECT to confirm the right deletion -- twice for good measure, and maybe ROLLBACK once or twice if you're feeling twitchy; Hover finger anxiously over the un-entered COMMIT command for several seconds while resisting Dunning–Kruger effect; COMMIT. :) Or alternately: Give the table an DeletedTimestamp and DeleatedReason column. Mark the records as deleted. Run around like a lunatic and fix queries so they don't show "deleted" columns to the rest of the app. Rather create a "view" which never sends out "deleted" columns and rows. Make a page in the application where people can "restore" deleted items. Because they do stupid things too once in a while

What time is it? Now. The perfect time.

Our lives are so monotonous, so still. Time just passes by for us and we never care. Every single day is just like the previous one. All we care about is how to make good bucks and how to stay ahead in the race all the time. We never have time to do what we want to do. Study science because everyone says so, do Engineering because they all say it's cool, join IT because they say here is all the money in the world. When was the last time you took a decision that was completely your own and you stood by it? If you are prompted to look into discreet history for an answer, I tell you, you are doing it all wrong. You and I are on the same track and that track, my friend, is not the best one to ride on. Our lives deserve a better treatment from us. Now is the time to live your life. If you are my age, you have well settled parents, you are not married and you have some steady cash flow, now is the perfect time to live your life. Go out. Do a course you always wanted to do, ...
