What makes a company appear "Nice" to people is it's ability to keep things transparent. And Google is a "nice" company.
What happened was, I wanted to extract all my emails, chats, contacts from my Gmail account to my local storage. I knew I can do that using Thunderbird, but I was looking for a better solution. More specifically, I wanted to understand how Thunderbird or any other IMAP/POP client actually worked. That's when I hit the http://www.dataliberation.org/ website. Google allows users to "Liberate" data. So coding a simple solution to fetch all mail through IMAP and store on my computer was not a big deal after that.
Bottom line is : Google is good. And you get to learn a lot when you really are on a quest!
